How can new simulation media facilitate the process of designing cities? How can new communications media enhance the quality of life in cities? These are two main questions addressed by SENSEable City Laboratory, a joint research initiative between MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning/CDD and MIT Media Lab.
- Concerning the first questions, the broad aim is to merge multiple representations used in design, leading to a coherent and isotropic working space. This would streamline the design process and bridge the digital and physical gap, which is a main source of disruption in today's teaching and practice. This would also facilitate the involvement of non-experts in urban design exercises and public decision-making about complex projects.
