80.000 bikes are stolen every year in Amsterdam. Here you see which neighborhood they are stolen from. However, where these bikes end up is unknown.
To find out what happens to these bikes, we identified areas in Amsterdam with a high likelihood of bike thefts occurring.
Then we identified the top 20 locations for bike theft in Amsterdam.
We deployed 5 bikes at each location, totalling 100 GPS traceable bikes.
After 5 months, 70 bikes were stolen.
Stolen bikes mainly travel locally.
50 of the 70 stolen bikes frequently visited the city center.
